John Schoenecker joined the TEI legal team as tax counsel in early August. A trial attorney with the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice for almost eight years, John has litigated a broad range of tax matters, including those related to foreign tax credits, tax shelters, enforcement, and bankruptcy fraud, among others. Prior to joining DOJ, John practiced law in the Washington, D.C., office of an international law firm. John comes to TEI with a well-developed perspective on the role of government in the tax area and the need to strike a careful balance among tax enforcement, compliance, and service. He earned his Juris Doctor from Northwestern University, where he was a member of the Law Review, and his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. Prior to law school, John worked in Chicago for an international advertising agency. His wife, Caroline, serves as chief of staff to Deloitte LLP’s chief inclusion officer and national managing partner for the Center for Corporate Governance. They have a two-year-old daughter, Maggie. TEI is thrilled to welcome a lawyer of John’s background and experience to the legal team to help continue our excellence in advocacy, education, and networking efforts.
